IDN Summit Launches Relief Efforts for Victims of Joplin Tornado

Reacting to the sheer devastation faced by health care industry colleagues in Joplin, Missouri, IDN Summit has announced it will launch a multi-faceted effort to help provide relief to victims of the Joplin tornado.

St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin suffered a direct hit from an EF-5 deadly tornado on May 22, 2011. St. John's is a part of the Sisters of Mercy Health System (Mercy), a 2010 winner of the IDN Summit Supply Chain of Excellence Award. St. John's sustained significant damage and five patients and a hospital visitor lost their lives. Many of St. John's workers lost their homes and other belongings.

"IDN Summit will honor our colleagues in Joplin with a silent auction and raffle during the 2011 Fall IDN Summit," explained John Kelly, CEO of IDN Summit and Expo. "IDN Summit is committed to raising $25,000 to benefit the Mercy Tornado Relief Fund established to help those who face hardship and loss due to this tragedy."

The 2011 Fall IDN Summit is slated for Sept. 13-15 at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix. Kelly said the Relief! Silent Auction and Raffle will kick off on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 13th, when registration opens at the Summit and run until the winners are announced on Wednesday evening at a special Relief! Reception to Honor Joplin event.

IDN Summit is asking for donations of 25 items for the silent auction. All proceeds from the auction will go to the Mercy Tornado Relief Fund. IDN Summit is also asking for donations of up to five items to be given away as part of the raffle. Deadline for donating auction and raffle items is August 1. Contact Lisa Ponssa at lisa@idnsummit.com or 859.309.6725 for details on how to donate an item. Organizations making donations of auction items will be recognized at the 2011 Fall IDN Summit. Attendees to the 2011 Fall IDN Summit will also have the opportunity to hear first-hand from ROi, Mercy's supply chain division, about the courageous doctors, nurses and other caregivers impacted by the Joplin tornado at a general session, "Lessons Learned from Joplin," taking place from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the Summit.

2011 FALL IDN SUMMIT & EXPO

Lessons Learned from Joplin
General Session: Wednesday, Sept. 14, 8:00 am - 9:00 am

Imagine the sheer terror inflicted by an EF-5 deadly tornado, tearing savagely through your town and cutting a path of lethal destruction over a mile wide and nearly 14 miles long. Chaos, death, injury and ruin lie in its wake. Perhaps no industry would feel better prepared to respond to such grave natural disaster than the healthcare sector. But what happens when such tragedy makes a victim of the hospital itself?

Sisters of Mercy Health System (Mercy)-through its supply chain division, ROi-will share the remarkable story that has unfolded since May 22, 2011, after Mercy's St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Missouri, suffered a direct hit from the most deadly tornado to strike the U.S. since 1947. Weeks later, 159 would be known dead. More than 8,000 homes and apartments, and more than 500 commercial properties, were damaged or destroyed

You'll hear how courageous doctors, nurses and other caregivers strived selflessly to evacuate 183 patients and quickly put into action a plan for tending to those left wounded and wanting all around them. You'll hear how Mercy had the St. John's Mercy field hospital, a 60-bed, high-tech unit, up and running within seven days following the tornado-providing medical care so deeply needed by the citizens of Joplin. Learn from executives how this incredible feat was handled with movement of supplies amidst recovery efforts after the tornado hit. Find out what measures were in place that aided the process and what the system has learned from this experience. You'll gain important insight for assessing your own system's approach to disaster preparedness and take away valuable ideas for helping to ensure an effective crisis plan.

Healthcare industry leader Chuck Lauer will open this session with a video highlighting some of the personal interviews and stories from those touched by this disaster.
